| I emphasized the dramatic darks and lights and complementary colors in this still life, painted from a group of flowers that I had placed in a vase on a window sill of our home. Although I started the painting from freshly cut flowers, they quickly wilted, the colors faded, and the leaves drooped. I took a number of reference photos and completed the painting from them. This is an example of how the immediacy of painting from life allowed me to convey the vibrancy I felt even though I completed the painting from photographs.
