As seen from a float plane in Alaska, the islands take on a surreal quality as they go on forever into the distance. I tried to capture these islands from ground level. I took this photograph from a fishing boat early one morning. Shafts of light were penetrating what had been a world of fog. As the sky lightened, the islands and points of land grew in depth and color intensity. The foreground islands are complementary to the background island, providing contrast and a feeling of recession. The colors in the water harmonize with the land and sky. There is a luminous quality that I try to convey in this painting. |
