| Loose appearing brushstrokes aren’t really loose at all, and spontaneous appearing paintings really are the product of experience, observation and knowledge of the subject being painted. Additionally, getting the correct tones/values (lights and darks) in the first wash without having to over-paint sections requires a lot of forethought and planning. I spend a lot of time “playing” with a variety of brushstrokes and paint mixes (pigments as well as paint to water ratio) in order to try to capture the wide range of tints and textures in the Coeur d’Alene river system. When things go well in my painting, the “technique” becomes second nature, thus allowing me to focus upon mood, feeling and atmosphere.
