I painted this while sitting on the shore of the Colville River. It was a chilly morning, with fog still embracing the hills in the distance. To convey fog in watercolor, I had to substantially wet the paper to achieve a soft wash effect. However, once wet, the paper was difficult to dry sufficiently in order to obtain a hard edged effect for the trees and river bank. I had to wait for the heat of the sun to dry the paper, and this morning was too misty and damp, and I didn’t have all day to wait around for paper to dry. This is as bad as waiting for water to boil. After doing all that I could, I finally packed up the painting and completed it in my studio. The following day I ordered a hair dryer that plugs into the outlet in my car. Technology does have its’ advantages. |
