| I painted this as the third in a series of three during a warm summer afternoon. After having painted two paintings earlier in the day, I began this painting at about 7:00 p.m. just as the light began to fade. By the time I completed the painting I was looking into the last rays of light as they filtered through the trees in the distance. The banks of the Spokane River took on a rich chocolate brown hue. The water that eddied along the shore was cast in shadow from the pine trees that overlooked the scene. I know this section of the river very well, as I have kayaked and canoed this stretch many times. This eddy provides a “sneak” route through the rapids during high water, as it permits a paddler to avoid a huge rock that forms a gigantic “hole” that boils and surges in the center of the river.
